Portrait of a Loon
A few years back I was camping on Canaan Street Lake in New Hampshire in early July. Each morning I would head down to the beach with my 600mm lens and photograph a pair of northern loons and their chick as they floated around catching small fish and crustaceans to feed the young one. As is typical with loons, they kept their distance from me until this male submerged for a longer than normal time frame and came up on the near side of a boat and dock, not more than forty feet from me. The sun was just rising over the tree tops behind me and catching the red eyes of the loon, making this a striking portrait.
