A Winter’s Dusk on Meredith Bay

On December 16, 2023, the sunset was at 4:09 PM. Around three that afternoon, I was working on color calibrating my printers when I suddenly realized I had an opportunity to capture a sunset. A quick check of the weather and cloud maps and it looked better than average that we might have a very red sunset.

I quickly gathered my gear, climbed in the car and started my 23-mile journey to Meredith, New Hampshire. Arriving in plenty of time, I sought a composition from across the bay so that I might capture not only the sunset but its reflection in the calm waters of Lake Winnipesaukee.

The "burner" of a sunset never quite materialized. That does not mean I wasn't pleased with the color we received. The color I did get to photograph lends itself to a "painterly" atmosphere over this very popular New Hampshire village.

Due to its dark tones, this image would appear at its best in a well-lit room. Another option is to place the image under a picture lamp or in the vicinity of track lighting that can highlight the rich tones in the image.

As with all fine art images, it is best to keep this out of direct sunlight whose UV rays can fade or diminish the image.

Recommended Media:
The most vibrant prints will be metal or acrylic prints. These both create vibrant colors and are extremely easy to care for.

Wrapped or framed canvas prints are another option, though the color reproduction on canvas tends to be a bit less vibrant due solely to the nature of canvas media.

In my studio, I print on a variety of stocks using high-quality UltraChrome pigmented inks whose color lasts for generations with proper care. When printed on Metallic Gloss or Luster papers, the colors are their most vibrant and are comparable to printing on metal as described above.

Fine Art matte prints are somewhat less vibrant while maintaining the rich tonality. Fine Art prints are printed on either Hot Press Bright or UltraSmooth Fine Art Matte. Both of these papers are acid-free and carry a manufacturer's claim of 150-200 year longevity. Metallic or Luster prints have a 75-100 year life span before the paper starts to lose its rich vibrance.

This is a single shot image taken on December 16, 2023 with a Nikon D850 digital camera and a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. In its native size it measures 28”x 15” at 300ppi. It is available as a paper print, canvas wrap, acrylic or as a print on infused aluminum, also known as a metal print. Use the email button above for inquiries.
