Back River Estuary
The Boothbay, Maine region is full of small villages, shops, scenic vistas. This image was taken on the southwest side of the peninsula, about five miles inland from where the Back River's waters empty into the Atlantic Ocean. We were fortunate to have spent a week camping at this very site. During the summer month the area is teaming with waterfowl and raptors, among them, the Bald Eagle. It was high tide when I took this shot. The beauty changes considerably at low tide when these picturesque waterways drain to just a small stream, exposing the mud flats that the egrets, herons and other shore birds forage in for their meals. It is not unusual to see some territorial battles between herons and egrets at low tide. And then, before you know it, the waters return and many of the birds return to their roosts to await the next low tide.
