Acrylic Prints are durable art pieces that produce vibrant colors through the polished acrylic. In this process the image is printed on the back of a sheet of crystal clear acrylic. Once dried a back sheet is attached, usually either white of black. There are a number of variations in acrylic prints. The most common is the thickness of the acrylic sheet which can range from 1/8” to 1/4” thick. Once the backer substrate is applied the backer board is affixed. This print has an acrylic backer. The other option is a DiBond backer. DiBond is made with an inorganic sheet sandwiched between to sheets of aluminum. Both type of prints are shipped with a wooded or metal support frame which holds the print off the wall by approximately 3/4” and is the means by which the print is hung on the wall.
Of the two I prefer the strength, durability and weight of the DiBond mounting. But to be honest, there is nothing wrong with the lighter weight mounting. Acrylic is a flexible component and the DiBond keeps it rigidly flat. At the same time, I have never had the lighter weight acrylic backer wrap or bend. In fact, this very print has hung on my office wall for almost two years with zero ill effect.
