Lake Mead Recreational Area

Just east of Las Vegas, Nevada lies Lake Mead, a manmade body of water held back by the massive Hoover Dam. The area surrounding Lake Mead is known as the Lake Mead Recreation Area, a playground for campers, hikers, boater and nature enthusiasts. To the north of Lake Mead sits a wandering landscape of buttes, mountains, valleys and troughs that in places seem otherworldly. Rt 167 (Northshore Rd) treks through this landscape offering many places to pull off the road to marvel at the jagged terrain. This image is looking north to the southern rim of the Valley of Fire State Park. My understanding is there's an ancient fault line traversing the distant ridge that has split mountains, and in one case an dormant 3,000 foot tall volcano (Hamblin-Cleopatra Volcano) and moved the two sides twelve mile from each other. I was there in March and found it a fascinating area to drive through.
