Heron Patience
While visiting central Florida a while back I was fortunate to discover some trails along the shore of Hancock Lake that brought me within mere feet of wildlife that normally disappears at the sight of humans. This Great Blue Heron was no more than eight feet from me. It waited patiently on this stump surveying the duckweed covered waters looking for any movement. I took several images and then walked on. Before I was ten steps down the path I heard a loud thrashing in the water and saw him jump back onto the perch with a large catfish in its beak.
The thing I like most about this image is the detail in the Great Blue Heron's feathers and face as well as how the light is reflecting off the water and highlighting the bird's features.
